Tragedies like the Sandy Hook shooting strike, and the country turns its attention to mental illness. But this is a conversation that needs to go deeper and last longer. KPCC journalists want Southern California community members to lead the conversation.

Tell us: How has mental illness affected your…

Bike Lane Draft EIR Goes to Public Hearing

On Feb 19 the LA Department of City Planning held its Westside public hearing on the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for implementation of the 2010 Bicycle Plan.  The capacity crowd of nearly 100 seemed about evenly divided between yeas and nays, although the nays were certainly rowdier.

The proposal for floating bike lanes on Westwood Blvd (see my Feb 15…

Westside Neighborhood Council Discusses Bike Lanes for Westwood Blvd

The Council’s Feb 14 meeting featured a discussion of proposed bike lanes for Westwood Blvd.

The discussion kicked off with a PowerPoint presentation by Eric Bruins of the LA County Bicycle Coalition.  For the stretch between Santa Monica and Pico, Bruins pitched a creative proposal involving floating bike lanes as an alternative to the city’s proposal.  A city representative who was present said the city was prepared to support the LACBC proposal and noted such a design has been…

Massage Parlors in Picwood

Like the proliferation of mattress stores, we now have a proliferation of massage parlors.

These are NOT allowed in the Neighborhood Oriented District (NOD) that runs along Pico and up Westwood.

Some are perfectly legit, if they were allowed, but they are not.  And some of them, most notably the most recent addition across from the Landmark, may be something "more" than massage, at least according to a few websites and Craigslist.

Westside Neighborhood Council -- Bike Lanes On Westwood?!?

Please come to the Westside Neighborhood Council meeting this Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

There will be someone from the LA Bike Coalition discussing proposed bike lanes on Sepulveda, Westwood, and Avenue of the Stars -- something that is scheduled for hearing on February 19th.

We love cycling and want to create a bike network on the Westside, but anyone who walks or drives down Westwood between Pico and Santa Monica knows that taking out lanes, or parking, or…

Unfortunately, I went online and read about Lenny's Deli (which used to be in Pacific Palisades, but is now closed)...

and it did not sound too swell.  I am not much of a deli person but as a longtime Rancho Park resident I will always miss Junior's.  It doesn't sound like Lenny's is going to be a worthy replacement.  If Junior's had to go, how I wish Porto's had taken its place.

Google it and see what you think.

And I am really unhappy about the new Century City parking fees.  Grrrr!

Juniors

According to a banner on the building Lenny's Deli is moving into the Juniors spot.Lenny's was in Palisades before shutting down in 2012 and seems to get less than glowing reviews on food blogs.

99 cent store to replace Ken Crane and La-Z-Boy

According to Mark Pollock at Westside Retail, the Ken Crane/La-Z-Boy stores on Pico between Military and Sepulveda were sold to the 99 cent store for $14 million.

I bought the recliner chair in my den from La-Z-Boy and my television from Ken Crane. Another change for Rancho Park.

What about Fresh and Easy or 99 Ranch Market or an independent store?

KPCC journalists want to hear from you.

We read every response, and…

I hear Pico Blvd is getting a new look?

There is talk about putting in median at overland and pico. Anyone else hear of this? Pico blvd does need to be beautified. Side walks are in need of replacement, etc. It is time the area looked more presentable. Your thoughts?  I wish the blvd looked more like Montana ave in Santa Monica. Just my opinion.
