Palms Park, nestled between the Palms Rec Center and Library on Overland and the under-construction tracks of the Expo Line, has been closed for months and months and months, walled off behind forbidding fences. Last week, it opened again in a discreet ceremony over Memorial Day with zero advance publicity, nothing even on the Parks & Recs website.

It's a sweet, unique little spot, accessible over a welcoming footbridge from Northvale Ave over the Expo tracks in the ravine below as well as the parking lot off Overland just above the 10. Despite the mighty transit arteries surrounding it, still a surprisingly quiet spot for child runarounds, and barbecues in the pits. Doggies need to stay on leash, as someone there will remind you if they don't. Watch for the arrogant feral cats lounging under and around the footbridge as you come in, and for the ladies feeding them around 5.
