Though the Expo Line lawsuits seem to have come to an end, bicycle advocates are concerned about bike trails in Cheviot Hills, reports LAStreetsblog.org publisher Damien Newton.

Thought LADOT and federal authorities and "Northvale 7" reached a settlement last year, cyclists are worried about access to the path.

The Westside Neighborhood Council and Council District 5, currently represented by Paul Koretz, will be provided with a presentation and a chance to weigh in on whether or not there should be an entrance to the bike path at Northvale and Dunleer Drive and whether or not the access should be 24 hours.

"The Westside Neighborhood Council isn’t exactly known for it’s support for transportation options," Damien stated. He noted that one member appeared on radio railing against Westwood bike lanes and highlighted Rancho Park Online member Calla Wiemer's report that Council seemed unreceptive to a floating bike lane program on Westwood.

Damien reported Cheviot Hills has a 20-year history of blocking access to public rights-of-way and cited the often locked Dunleer Footbridge as an example. The bridge, operated by the Cheviot Hills Homeowners’ Association, connects Cheviot Hills to Palms Park at Overland and National.

Plus, we've got some great attractions and conveniences that they won't want to miss.
1. The Rancho Park Archery Range

Polo schmolo. If you're looking for a royal sport, it is archery that hits the bullseye. Although several English kings met their demise at the point of an artfully shot arrow, (including one King William II who is believed to have been killed at the behest of his younger brother Henry), the game was so encouraged by some monarchs that they are said to have banned playing football, cricket and golf as these sports interfered with archery practice. But don't let the mahogany walls lined with books fool you, this new Rancho Park bar, which stays open until 2:00 a.m., is just the sort of hip-happening spot that should remind Will and Kate of their London club outings.

Since they certainly are doing a lot of driving, and will no doubt be accompained by a large convoy of cars, the whole entourage would do well to make a stop at Rancho Park's Crown Carwash, where everyone gets the royal treatment.
Culver City

Actually, the Duke and Duchess will be coming to Culver City on the last day of their visit--the Royal Itinerary will include a visit to a job fair for veterans at Sony. As William serves as President of the British Academy of Film and Television, such a visit to Culver City is highly appropriate. But as long as the couple is in our city, I’d like to suggest they visit:

1. Royal/T Cafe

For a little touch of home with an arty Culver City twist, the Royal Couple should visit the Royal/T. They can enjoy a High Tea (I recommend the Royal Milk Tea), which comes complete with lovely finger sandwiches and pastries. Because Royal/T is also an exhibition space, they can now also take in the eclectic show curated by New York artist KAWS featuring the work of more than 25 contemporary artists including Olaf Breuning and Takashi Murakami.

2. H.D. Buttercup

As newlyweds, William and Catherine are going to want some cool furnishings for their new house, right? Well, H.D. Buttercup, located in the Helms Bakery District is just the ticket. (If they are able to slip away for a burger and sweet potato fries at My Father’s Office, all the better). At H.D. Buttercup, they’ll be able to mix and match from a wide selection of furniture, fine linens, lighting, rugs, artwork, and home accents. And they’ll be visiting just in time for the store’s half-yearly sale where everything in the entire store is 20 to 70 percent off. Man are they lucky.

3. Waterloo & City

Finally, at the end of a long day, William and Catherine should head west to Waterloo & City. Named for the London Underground railway line, the restaurant prides itself on being a traditional British gastropub. Their late night menu features a wide and changing variety of charcuterie, or the couple could just sit back with a “Dark & Stormy,” Goslings rum and ginger beer, and soak up the Culver City friendly.

As the beloved figureheads of one country, Kate and William should travel around Los Angeles and visit some of the inspiring homages to U.S. President Barak Obama, the most cherished president since Kennedy.

Normally reserved for king and queen of the hipsters, these two refurbished chairs in Echo Park's Elysian Park near the Grace Simons Lodge are ready for the Royal Couple. The EastsideLA posted a pic of these tree trunk chairs created several years ago that were spray painted metallic gold and silver.

But if Kate and Will were coming to Echo Park I would recommend grabbing the "Secret Stairs" guidebook by Charles Fleming, which takes the urban hiker through the history of Los Angeles' oldest neighborhood. From Red Hill where the Communists lived, to Elysian Park around Dodger Stadium and down to Echo Park Avenue for Delilah's Bakery for a treat. It's a real taste of Echo Park.

One of Southern California’s most cherished and engaging weekend celebrations kicks off its 16th storied year in a new home on USC’s University Park campus April 30 and May 1, 201.

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

What is the Festival of Books?

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books brings together the people who create books with the people who love to read them. The festival attracts more than 140,000 book lovers each year.

Who attends the Festival?

People of all ages from across Southern California and even other parts of the country. The festival is a free public event, and includes exciting author events, storytelling, cooking demonstrations and poetry readings. The Festival of Books also includes nearly 300 exhibitor booths representing booksellers, publishers, literacy and cultural organizations.

Who exhibits?

Booksellers, publishers, literacy and cultural organizations sell and promote books and book-related merchandise and distribute related information. Many of the independent booksellers participating in the festival represent the diverse ethnic and cultural communities of Los Angeles and sell books of different languages and genres.

How can I exhibit?

If you are interested in exhibiting at the 2011 Festival of Books to be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1, 2011, please contact IMG at 866-790-5813 or FOBexhibitorinfo@imgworld.com.

How do authors participate?

The Festival Author Committee invites selected authors to participate in readings and panel discussions. Writers who wish to be considered for the Festival of Books are asked to click here to download a copy of the programming application.

Please complete the application and fax it back to (213) 237-2335 or mail to: Festival of Books Author Submissions, Los Angeles Times, Event Programming Submissions, 202 West First Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. You may include press clips, reviews and a bio (please DO NOT SEND COPIES OF THE BOOKS).

How can I volunteer for next year’s festival?

The success of the festival is largely due to the contributions of its volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for the 2011 Festival, please call (213) 237-6503 and leave your name and address, or apply online at http://www.troutco.com/fob/. If you have volunteered in the past, please note your prior assignment and indicate if you would like to work in that area again.

Why is the Festival of Books changing locations?

USC central location in the downtown arts and education corridor offers many attributes and allows for expanded programming, the benefit of more usable space for sponsor and exhibitor activation and sampling, pouring and concession opportunities.

Central location – USC’s downtown location provides a centrally-located venue for the event, thus making the festival easily-accessible for a greater number of people.

Access to public transportation – The USC campus is served by several public-transportation routes and options. Specific public transportation routes will be posted to our website as the Festival draws near.

Opportunity for expansion – The USC campus will offer us more usable space, allowing the festival a greater variety of programming options for guests and exhibitors.

Diversity – Festival of Books’ new home enables our guests to experience the diversity of Los Angeles.

Will discussions/panels still be free?

Like years past, panel tickets will be free but a service fee will be charged.

Writing Workshops, pre-sale panel passes and special programming will – also as in years past – have a cost associated.

Will limited-capacity events still be ticketed?

Yes. Ticketing for these events will be similar to past FOB, with tickets available in advance through an online ticketing service.

Will there still be a charge to park?

Yes, there will be a $10.00 parking charge at USC. This is the same as last year and the USC campus will provide a greater variety of parking options and more spaces.

Can the size of the USC campus handle the event?

Yes. USC will more than accommodate the crowds that have traditionally visited the Festival and, importantly, allow for an increase in the audience we can accommodate. Our planning team has taken every aspect of the event into consideration to make sure a great Festival experience can be expected at USC.

Is the campus A.D.A. compliant?

Yes.

Is the USC campus a safe environment?

USC’s campus has been consistently rated in among the Top-10 safest college campuses in the United States and has a fully dedicated public safety department.

On 9/15, USC was the very first university in the world to be declared a “Safe Community” by the World Health Organization Collaborating Center.

Will I still be able to enjoy my favorite Festival of Books stages and areas?

Yes. Although they may be formatted differently, the Festival of Books will include Children’s Stage, Cooking Stage, Y.A. Stage, Los Angeles Times Stage, Poetry Stage, Etc. Stage, as well as the Los Angeles Times Pavilion and Hero Complex areas. In addition, we are working to offer some additional programming and attractions.

Why did the date move away from the last full weekend in April?

The 2011 Festival of Books date was moved to accommodate the Easter holiday. The Festival of Books will return to the last full weekend in April for 2012.

When I stopped by the new Blossom Floral, not only was I impressed with the selection but also what they did with the pedestrian alley between them and the nail salon.

The floral shop owner turned in the concrete walk into a living billboard of succulents and flowers.

Then I noticed the painted over sign above the alley - Rancho Park Arcade. The glass tube than once held neon proudly proclaimed a time when this strip was the Rancho Park Arcade. Still intact, it would be really cool if it just painted a neon color.

Of course Blossom used to be on the corner and now is two doors down on Pico. The owner said the corner shop was a lot more expensive. The alley was just a bonus - but what a bonus it turned out to be.

I left with some spider mums, ranunculus and a succulent that's now blooming.

Cruickshank said he was already a fan of Arnold Palmer when he came upon the 18th tee at Rancho Park Golf Course.

"A couple of years ago, I had the chance to meet Arnold Palmer. He flexed those Popeye-sized forearms, squeezed my hand with steely conviction and then fixed me with the kind of gaze that made me feel like I was his favourite grandkid. It’s easy to see why 'The King' still makes golfers go weak in the knees but I became an even bigger fan when I found out about the plaque at the 18th tee at Rancho Park, a very good municipal course in the west side of Los Angeles," Cruickshank writes.

"Rancho Park hosted the L.A. Open in 1961 when Arnie was in his go-for-broke prime and during the opening round, he striped his drive down the throat of the 18th fairway, a par five. The smart play would have been to hit a safe 4-iron down the narrowing fairway but there was no lay-up in the King and instead he yanked out the 3-wood and then promptly hit the next four balls out of bounds, two into the driving range and two onto Patricia Avenue. His final score tallied up to a 12 and the plaque commemorates Arnie’s double digit performance, which oddly made me like him even more and reinforced the fact that L.A. is the city of dreams—and occasional nightmare."

I'm not sure that Arnie's performance, or the plaque, reinforces L.A as the city of dreams or nightmares, but I do appreciated that it further cemented Rancho Park's place in history, and as a destination.

There were a lot of treausres as the owner Craig and his wife seemed to be into a lot of different artistic pursuits.

There was intricate woodworking, hand-powered drills, pastels and paintings. Inside there were large pieces - an antique secretary's desk, chairs that needed reupholstering and other finds in different states of perfection.

I left with eight 45s from greats like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Them, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors. I don't know what I'll do with them. But they are beautiful. Just like the scarpbooking, jewelery-making stuff that came with the organizer I bought.

But the most valuable takeaway were the Overland Avenue neighbors that I met. A handful of them were there (some with bloody Marys) helping Craig sell his stuff and putting tarps on everything whenever it sprinkled.

I go every year and I hope to see some of my friends there - please say hello. Please take photos and videos and let people know how we celebrate King's legacy. Below is the first movie I made and I've highlighted the vision of several MLK parade goers in the Videos department.

Numbers similar to Boston, Phoenix and Omaha per capita, as I noted in a story just last month.

"I never thought we'd see these numbers," said Sal LaBarbera, a veteran homicide detective with the LAPD, to the LATimes.com. "It is night and day compared to the old days. Night and day."

The LATimes uses West Adams as one of their example - there was not one homicie in West Adams in end 2010.

"It's great to see the changes that are happening here. I give a lot of credit to the work the police are doing, especially on the gangs. But it's also about people in the
community becoming more involved," said
Elbert Preston, 59, a lifelong resident of the area and president of the
West Adams neighborhood council, told the LATimes.com.

Homicides in the Vermont Square of South Los Angeles went from 15 homicides in
2007 to three so far this year, the LATimes.com reported.

And it's not just homicides, violent cimes and property crimes are also down significantly.
