Rancho Park News - Selling Ads in Parks and The Latest on Medical Marijuana Tonight on KCET's SoCal Connected

As a neighborhood with two parks, Rancho Park and Palms Park, tonight's SoCal Connected is must-see-tv. It airs at 9:00 pm tonight on KCET and you can also watch online.

This heads-up comes from my good friend and former colleauge, Karen Foshay, who brings her award-winning investigative journalism skills to the KCET show for the benefit us all of us in Rancho Park and throughout Los Angeles.

From Karen...

The first segment features the fruits of a three month investigation into a plan in the works to place advertising - or  "sponsorship" signs -  in LA's parks, with the specific intention of targeting kids - your kids.  Who's backing this?  One of the largest law firms in the country which happens to be the second biggest lobbyist in LA.  Watch tonight as we show you how things really work in the city of Los Angeles.   Brian Rooney is the correspondent.

My second story is a fun look at what is going on with medical marijuana clinics in Los Angeles - we got confrontation video, kids on bikes buying pot and a very cool time lapse. I hope you can view this, it's hilarious.   Judy Muller is the correspondent.

If you live in Los Angeles, you need to watch this show.

I watched the park segment last night and I would hate to have more ads in the parks. But the SoCal Connected piece looked at the issue in a vacuum, without the reality that if you don't raise money with ads how will you balance the budget? It's easy to say no ads, but then to make up that revenue do you close the parks on Monday and Tuesday and lay off a couple of workers? Do you stop trimming the trees? I thought it was unfortunate to only have one part of the discussion. I am glad SoCal Connected raised the issue.

Dave Zahniser in the LATimes provides a little more context because the city now begins major cutting of programs because LA is in a $100 million deficit. In that context, which is better Yogi Bear or a Park Ranger?
