Mayor Eric Garcetti, in partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy, JPMorgan Chase & Co., The California Endowment, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, have launched of the Los Angeles Summer of Learning program, a citywide initiative to keep youth engaged in learning this summer.

Los Angeles youth age 3 - 24 can access 100 valuable learning opportunities online and in person at City parks and libraries, LAUSD schools, and with museums and cultural institutions like the Getty Center and Aquarium of the Pacific. The curriculum will offer robust options in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (S.T.E.A.M.), as well as a work-readiness pathway geared towards the skills needed to succeed in the modern economy.

“LA Summer of Learning will transform Los Angeles into a 500-square-mile campus and provide learning opportunities for our youth when school is not in session,” said Mayor Garcetti. “By connecting our students with creative, interactive and interest-driven learning opportunities, we will help our city’s youth learn new skills and prepare to enter the workforce.”

Upcoming learning opportunities in the Rancho Park area include Documentary Film at Venice Arts, the Getty Center Art Detective Badge program and the family Sundays program at LACMA.

“Learning happens everywhere, not only in the classroom,” LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy said. “More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth is due to unequal access to summer learning opportunities. Thanks to the tremendous collaboration of our community partners, businesses, neighborhoods and city agencies, LA Summer of Learning will help increase access for youth, particularly in underserved neighborhoods. Together, we will make learning more visible to participants, parents, teachers, academic institutions, and potential employers.”

The Los Angeles Summer of Learning brings together a coalition of public, private, and non-profit partners to offer Connected Learning opportunities to help students further develop the knowledge and skills essential to their academic and professional success. The program will reward students by issuing digital “badges” to mark participation and/or achievement in topic-specific and pre-approved curricula and give students a vehicle to document and recognize success that can be shared with peers, schools, and even potential employers.

The program is made possible by private donations, including $500,000 from JPMorgan Chase, and $200,000 from the California Endowment. The MacArthur Foundation, which helped Chicago pilot the program last summer, has also provided valuable technical assistance in designing the program, the website and digital badges.

Mayor Garcetti's office led the creation of this program, arranged financial support and has collaborated with 30 partner organizations, including LAUSD's Beyond the Bell, which led the development of the curriculum and administers the program.

Youth and their parents can sign up for the program at www.summeroflearning.la and can also visit the program's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/lasummeroflearning or Twitter at https://twitter.com/la_learning for more information.
Haitian Music Star BélO to Perform at Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz September 28tag:ranchoparkonline.ning.com,2012-09-10:6318100:BlogPost:134912012-09-10T21:10:33.000ZSusan von Seggernhttp://ranchoparkonline.ning.com/profile/SusanvonSeggern

Born in Haiti in 1979, BélO has been hailed as Haiti's musical ambassador to the world. A socially conscious singer-songwriter with a sophisticated sound and winner of numerous awards, including the prestigious "Prix Radio France International Discoveries” honor, BelO's sound is a sublime mixture of Jazz, Rock, Reggae and the Afro-Haitian traditional rhythms known as Ragganga. After his first two album releases Lakou Trankil (Soley Sounds, 2005) and Reference (NatiProd, 2008) sung in his rich and colorful native language, Haitian Creole, BélO has established himself as a Haitian and international artist signpost. After the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, BélO's home was destroyed, and he was able to relocate temporarily in France with the help of Cultures France. During that time BélO's primary focus was to create awareness for his country at various performances around the world. Upon returning to Haiti, BélO's third album Haiti Debout, or Haiti Stand-up (2011) was released by Radio France/France Info and distributed, globally by Harmonia Mundi. Already on the first leg of the "Haiti Debout" tour, BélO has performed in Germany, Rome, Romania, France, and the United States.
Michel Jonasz’ Abraham Premiers in Los Angeles to Open the 2012/2013 Season at Théâtre Raymond Kabbaztag:ranchoparkonline.ning.com,2012-09-10:6318100:BlogPost:132732012-09-10T21:07:35.000ZSusan von Seggernhttp://ranchoparkonline.ning.com/profile/SusanvonSeggern

Michel Jonasz has been a beloved figure on the French music scene since his breakthrough hits "Du blues du blues du blues" and "J’veux pas qu’tu t’en ailles" in 1977. His success continued in the 80’s with his Tristesse album that produced a string of hit singles "Minuit sonne," "Rock à gogo" and Jonasz’s version of "Lucille," and earned the singer another gold disc. His 1984 greatest hits album also went gold and in 1985 he won three "Victoires de la Musique" awards, the French Grammys, for Best Singer and Best Producer, and Best Single of the Year for "La boîte de jazz". Through the 90’s and 00’s Jonasz continued to release popular albums, tour extensively and appear in over 35 films. One of his most acclaimed roles was in Un amour à taire, a drama about the persecution homosexuals during World War II which won the Audience Award for Best Feature at five of the top LGBT film festivals in the US, including LA’s Outfest.

In 2008 Michel Jonasz got down to a project close to his heart by writing a dramatic play centered on the story of his maternal grandfather, a Hungarian cantor who perished in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. On stage Jonasz embodies Abraham, a Polish Jew, and famous cantor with a unique voice, who just before dying, recalls his deepest memories: his childhood, the escape from Poland, the arrival in Hungary, meeting his wife, his joys and sorrows…until exile and deportation to the camps. Moments of humor and emotion follow one another, acting and singing are intertwined. Jonasz puts Tzigane or gypsy music under the spotlight with inspired original compositions. Jonasz directed the work himself and went to Hungary to record the soundtrack. From September 2009 to April 2010, he presented the one man show at the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Montparnasse in Paris. He has also performed Abraham throughout France and in Israel. The show will be in French with projected English subtitles. Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz is honored to bring this emotional and stunning work to Los Angeles for its first performance here.
